From Prototype to Product: India's TRL-8 Sensor Challenge

India is gearing up for a sensor innovation leap, and Sense2Scale is at the forefront of that movement. This national-level hands-on hackathon challenges students, researchers, and startups to build real-world sensor systems targeting TRL-8 — the final step before productization. Participants will prototype impactful solutions in areas like respiratory monitoring, vitals tracking, and hydration sensing using low-cost, off-the-shelf sensors. The goal: develop robust, test-validated systems that can be seamlessly upgraded with Indian sensor chips in the future. If you’re passionate about healthcare, embedded systems, or IoT, this is your launchpad to national visibility and impact.

Why Sense2Scale?

India is rapidly building its indigenous sensor design ecosystem across pressure, biomedical, environmental, and gas domains.

While chip design is underway, there’s an urgent need to validate applications, build real-world datasets, and establish TRL-8 testing pipelines.

Sense2Scale enables innovators to create fully functional, TRL-8 ready sensor systems using available components today.

The hackathon directly contributes to India’s electronics self-reliance mission and helps accelerate market-readiness for Indian sensors.

Objective

Enable students, researchers, and early-stage startups to:

  • Build TRL-8-ready sensor systems with sensor budget under ₹4,000.
  • Implement complete TRL-8 testing: calibration, drift, field tests, and uptime.
  • Document reproducible data, hardware diagrams, and firmware pipelines.
  • Create scalable solutions that can later integrate Indian sensor chips seamlessly.

FAQ

Who can participate?

Students, researchers, and startups (up to 2 years old) across India are eligible. Teams must consist of 1 to 3 members.

What types of sensors are allowed?

Any commercially available sensor under ₹4,000 per unit may be used. Suggested sensors include pressure, temperature, humidity, PPG, and bio-impedance types.

Can I participate solo?

Yes, individual participation is allowed, though teams of up to 3 are encouraged for collaborative learning and project scaling.

What is TRL-8 and why is it important?

TRL-8 (Technology Readiness Level 8) indicates a system that has been tested and validated in a real-world environment, just before commercialization. Achieving TRL-8 ensures your prototype is robust, well-documented, and field-ready.

What are the prizes?

Top 3 teams will receive awards at the ELCIA Tech Summit and get a chance to feature in the Sensor Readiness Showcase. Select teams may also receive product incubation support at ELCIA’s tech hub.

What happens after the hackathon?

Selected teams may be guided to scale their prototypes into market-ready products, and their datasets and test benches will contribute to validating future Indian-made sensors.
